Students conducted a lab comparing the rocks from two different areas of the Grand Canyon. They conducted an acid test and made other observations about the rocks. They discovered the definitions of limestone, sandstone and shale through this lab.

We viewed a slide show of different parts of the Grand Canyon and generated questions students had about the Grand Canyon. We then learned about John Wesley's Powell's journey through the Grand Canyon in the late 1800's.

We have begun a study of Earth Science. Students took a virtual field trip of the Grand Canyon today. They made observations of rocks found in the Grand Canyon and studied landforms in the Grand Canyon through photographs and an interactive panaromic computer program.

I will not be at school from Wednesday 10/1 - Monday 10/6. I will be on a tanner crab survey with the AK Dept. of Fish and Game. This is part of an outreach effort by Fish and Game to bring real science back to the classroom. This will be a unique opportunity for students on my return. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders are invited to come and learn to ballroom dance Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 16 -November 20 at the after-school Ballroom Dance Club in the commons. This dance form is fun for all ages, and all levels. Instructor Pat Belec of The Dance Loft in Juneau brings years of experience teaching ballroom dance classes in Juneau and beyond. Pat is excited to meet our kids, and to get started helping them cultivate their own dancing ability. Ballroom dancing brings healthy exercise to young people as they practice the social graces of interacting with others. In our second year, this club is supported by the Juneau International Folkdancers and CBJ Youth Activities grant.
